A Beginner’s Guide to BMFA Competency Schemes: Fixed Wing Aircraft
Are you new to flying radio-controlled planes and wondering how to prove your skills? The British Model Flying Association (BMFA) Achievement Scheme is the gold standard in the UK for demonstrating your flying competency.
At Heart of England Aeromodellers (HOEA), we strongly encourage all our members to participate in this scheme. It’s not just about getting a certificate; it’s about becoming a safer, more confident pilot.
The ‘A’ Certificate: The Foundation
The ‘A’ Certificate is the starting point for most pilots. It demonstrates that you can fly safely and independently without constant supervision. To pass the ‘A’ test, you’ll need to show you can:
– Perform pre-flight safety checks.
– Take off safely.
– Fly left and right-hand circuits.
– Perform a figure-of-eight.
– Land safely within a designated area.
– Answer a few basic questions about safety and CAA regulations.
The ‘B’ Certificate: Advancing Your Skills
Once you have your ‘A’ Certificate, you can aim for the ‘B’ Certificate. This test is designed to show a higher level of skill and precision. It includes more complex maneuvers like loops, rolls, and stall turns, proving you have true mastery over your aircraft in various orientations.
