A Beginner’s Guide to BMFA Competency Schemes: Rotary Wing and Helicopters

Flying an RC helicopter or multi-rotor (drone) requires a different set of skills compared to fixed-wing aircraft. That’s why the British Model Flying Association (BMFA) has a dedicated Achievement Scheme for rotary-wing pilots. Whether you’re hovering your first helicopter or flying a racing quadcopter, the BMFA scheme helps you develop safe, reliable flying habits. Here at the Heart of England Aeromodellers (HOEA), we support rotary pilots through every step of their training. The Rotary ‘A’ Certificate The ‘A’ Certificate for helicopters and multi-rotors is all about demonstrating basic control and safety. To pass this test, you will need to: – Perform thorough pre-flight checks on your complex rotary mechanics. – Hover steadily in a designated box. – Perform slow, controlled pirouettes (turning the model on the spot). – Fly basic forward flight circuits (flying in a circle or oval shape). – Perform a safe, controlled landing. The Rotary ‘B’ Certificate The ‘B’ Certificate takes things to the next level. This is where you prove your ability to fly in all orientations and handle more dynamic maneuvers. You’ll be asked to perform nose-in hovering (where the helicopter faces you), stall turns, and loops, showing complete command of the aircraft. Multi-Rotor Specifics If you fly drones or quadcopters, the BMFA also has specific variations of the scheme tailored to multi-rotors, focusing on the unique flight characteristics of these machines.
